Who Needs Spaces In Life?
WARNING: SEVERE RISK OF LOSS OF SANITY
People of NationStates, I hereby present to you the full, unedited, transcript of my interview in the trees with [nation]Jutsa[/nation]... Over the course of recording, I lost of all my dwindling sanity - you have been warned... Enjoy! (dash before indicates myself, no dash = Jutsa)
18.17 - You good to start soon Jutsa? Literally just opened discord 😂 whenever you are :^) - Right ho... --- - Hello Jutsa! How are you? Thank you so much for agreeing to join us today! Hi Realize; I'm good :3 A pleasure to get the chance to do an interview with you \:) Hope you're also doing well ^^ Excited to see what questions you've cooked up for me 😛 [strike]You still there Realize? 🫠 I didn't _already_ scare you away did I >.>[/strike] - Oops, sorry got playing the saxophone and forgot 😬 You're going to have a lot of that with me taking a hot 15-30 minutes to answer each question 🤪 (actually debating getting a concertina for black friday but we'll see. plus I already have like ten instruments I don't use smh) - Well, let's start (as always) nice and simple... Tell us a bit about yourself? Auguhgh... where do I begin 🫠 This may take me a hot minute lol. - No worries, just give me something to go on 🙃 18.47 Soooo... _outside_ of NationStates, I've got a bit of history. Worked as a cashier for 20 months, a year of which was during covid - that was hell. Used to volunteer at an animal shelter during that time (when they actually allowed people in to volunteer) - loved spending time with the cats there. (I myself have 4 now, had 11 once upon a time.) Currently studying for public administration, although my ever-omnipresent looming lethargy has been set in overdrive the past year so 🫠 I enjoy making music - really, have completely different songs that come to me in mind vs. in dreams vs. what actually pops out the other end most of the time. Love experimenting with xenharmonics and non-standard tunings - i.e. playing with notes between notes. (Just as well I don't play an instrument despite having a dozen-odd.) I also _love_ conlanging (obsessively so...) and have been praised for cursedness. (As a participant in the 3rd Annual Cursed Conlang Circus, I appreciate that lol.) Also genuinely adore worldbuilding; I'm not great at jotting down all my thoughts, but I've got tons of aliens, robots, cartoons and worlds floating around up there. Recently _started_ getting that stuff written down for a future-tech RP that a Forestian's hosting actually. (Got a couple others that I should also attend to, but... satirical interdimensional robotic aliens that never get along beckons me when I have the energy.) Also love puzzles. I make a ton for an incredibly niche (but still great) custom-level community for an old 2000s puzzle game series called Wonderland (specifically return to wonderland and wonderland adventures). Still upload solutions on my main channel, but like everything that's slowed down a bit. Also crafted variant sudokus (thanks Cracking the Cryptic) back when they started out - still love them, just can't find the time/energy it seems. 🫠 Me generally (on and off NS) I am politically a registerred independent (left-leaning environmentalist libertarian cynical of big business/government if you will) and overall a disorganized absent-minded slothy bogglemind who loves nature (even bees despite extremely painful insectophobia) and cats (who are admittedly environmentally kind of awful but who can't love them 🤪) On NationStates I have quite a bit of history. I first discovered it in like... mercy, end of 2015 was already been 9 years ago 😭 So yeah I didn't know about it, despite futile attempts at not looking too hard, when a friend (from the niche puzzle game community) was working on a discord bot (when they first came out) and added a feature to display nationstates nations and general information. And I thought "Wait what is this" because I'd been playing on a warzone factions minecraft server since I was 12 and _loved_ politicking and managing bombastic 9-yos and 21-yos alike (whether I was good at it was another matter entirely, neverthemind!) and thought why didn't you tell me about this sooner So I started out. Definitely was not a great start lol. (Though maybe less awful than a few modern powerhouse players. ;p) But I virtually _always_ loved Forest (its map, environmental theme, seeming maturity) - if anything was just too scared to leave my region (for which 6-odd players took me in after I RP'd with alt accounts in II - don't ask) for one that felt so up-scale. (Probably a good thing too.) I finally did like... idk how long ago it was \uses RMB forum-view search feature SIX FREAKING YEARS AGO WHAT anyway yeah, didn't get super involved until I finally ran as a joke candidate for the second time (and finally got selected as cartographer, the position of my dreams, the month prior) and accidentally found myself the only running opposition to the whole private government discord accord. So that was fun 🫠 Not done yet just running into a discord character limit in a hot minute lol. Could go on about Forest history and my own, but I suppose I should also list off three other bits of my history before Forest (and I'll try not to waffle as much as I generally tend to) 19.01 - Jutsa... You do realise this is just the first question... You've answered my next ten already 🤣 But do go on... Oh 🫠 awesome... I've predicted your entire interview 😂 - Ignore the NS stuff, we'll come back to that later 🙃 OK 😂 there's a lot LOL - I usually start irl and flow onto NS since most people know about you on NS but not much on irl Save your next essay and you can copy it in in a bit 🤣 [strike]done and done LOL[/strike] Ah yeah that makes sense 🫠 did you uh, have any followup questions regarding irl? ;P - Haven't even started reading yet... I've played all my grade 8 pieces already and you're still not done Oh gosh you're going to have a lot to get through lemme know when you're done 😛 - I'm gonna have dinner, be back in about 30mins... we might end up having to continue this over a couple of days (it's already 7 here 🤣) Aye, sounds good :3 I could keep rambling about my time _on_ NS while you eat if you want... xD Who knows! I might even be finished in half an hour 🤪 - I think we'll smash the record for longest interview 😄 (oh how naive of me looking back) Go ahead and ramble then... Aye 😂 will keep rambling then. If I could put my energy into anything other than reminiscing about the old days extremely few individuals would ever care about, personal analysis/opinion on a very specific situation or statistic that extremely few individuals would ever care about, or springing to live weird innovations for very niche and impractical things that extremely few individuals would ever care about (puzzles, worldbuild, music experimentation, issue writing, etc. - literally what I do for fun), I'd be an unstoppable force of nature. Unfortunately those things require significantly less effort from me (though significantly more time than perceived) and everything else (aside from consuming food) is often a frankly exhausting battle ;p (frankly much of the time even that is tiresome at best but I digress) ^ and yes it took me 5 minutes just to write my segue 19.21 So to go on with my time before Forest, one is my time as an issues writer. I still dabble in it once in a blue moon (when the itch strikes with a force I wish I could tap into for literally anything else), but my hay day was before joining Forest actually - and in fact, Forest being home to so many issues authors and editors at the time (the "forest cabal" if you will) was probably the final thing that convinced me to finally join Forest lol. I've thus far written 30 issues (29 if you count my two coauthorships as halves, which I do), although I've written maybe 250-odd drafts total. Needless to say, having a 12% success rate is not exactly great - quantity over quality approach if you will 🫠 But that's what happens when you write for fun and experimentation and don't have the greatest of grasps on what conceptually would make for a great issue topic (despite my list of over 100 issue ideas [some maybe good, some probably bad, some likely already covered without me realizing] currently rotting in a factbook.) Needless to say I would probably _not_ make a good editor 😂 Sadly, could never get into WA writing. (Goes to show perhaps my initial life ambitions were a bit dubious and idealistic at best ;p) Fortunately both in-character and out-of-character I'm not thrilled about the whole institution. I do still - quite - enjoy getting extremely huffy and puffy about certain resolutions (mainly the GA, though certain SC declarations and repeals I've also taken qualms in), and my urge to experiment and innovate in the weirdest and most impractical of ways possible has of course lead to me crafting some truly bizarre proposals (my personal favorite being "Declaration in Regard to Hippopotami" which failed queue twice, although my unicode chart depicting an N-Day top-10 leaderboard that dies upon submission comes a close second), so every once in a blue moon I rear my ugly head. Still have yet to actually pass anything though and I don't think I ever well either lol. 19.30 Speaking of the SC, the second thing of note is my commendation, for which Candensia (an issues editor at the time) had written up for me, which I greatly appreciated. Happened not long after I joined Forest, and I actually moved back to the Mesan Union specifically to get commended there lol. The commendation is very nice, although I certainly don't feel like I deserve it 🫠 It includes my issue authoring, as well as (as much as the SC could ICly relay it) my time after Drasnia and before Valentine Z [who's still doing it omg] upkeeping the master Issues thread. I greatly enjoyed doing it, but I was very glad to relinquish it to Val since I just couldn't stick to updating it like I used to. Although I still on occasion update my lists of Nations/Tribes and Religions/Cults. I'd definitely thought about doing others (recurring characters, companies, authors/editors based on issues written/edited, etc.) but fortunately others have done a superior job of doing those. Not sure how many are _still_ kept up to date, but I'm thrilled they're at least partly done 🫠 (Might have to consider taking a look to see if there're any needing a new upkeeper...) Uh. Right. But I digress. (often) The other things on that commendation were much smaller "achievements", if you will. For instance, my contributions to NSIndex. I did spend about a month porting old UN and WA resolutions over there, but after burning through a hundred-or-so easy ones, it got a lot more tedious - and at the same time I realized "wait this is kinda useless", cause it's already listed on-forum (and later IA created a whole repository to boot). Issues were kind-of in the same ballpark, between the issues list and, at the time, Sacara's issue finder (and now Trotterdam's issue results and policy trackers). I do still feel bad leaving Minoa after becoming basically the only remaining moderator, but I just couldn't do it anymore. (and this was while working too, I believe, so it was just too much for me.) Very sad to see the site down now. Hope it comes back, but I also understand if it's just too much work to try to keep up. Hope Minoa's at least doing well. The other frankly small thing on my commendation was my time in The East Pacific and cofounding the University of TEP was... kind of an accident xD I got invited to UTEP's original discord when it was starting out, cause I wanted to help out new aspiring issues authors. It sort-of died out, but when Yuno was elected head of TEP at the time, she noticed I was the only person who posted anything there in months and I wound up being put in charge of a project to renew it. Wasn't a great start (became exclusively a TEP forum thing), but it later found its footing back on discord. I really had very little to do with it though, aside from being a spark of inspiration to revive it, as well as pushing for it to be more than just a regional thing. Ngl not sure where it stands now, but I actually am still technically a TEP citizen with government roles lol. 19.36 - You're... You're still going... YES I'M STILL GOING I'M 2/3 DONE DON'T JUDGE ME - I'll be back... 19.44 and speaking of other regions... FINALLY coming round to my _third_ thing, which was actually a thing I was not commended for, and certainly couldn't be commended for 🤪 Which would be honestly the thing I probably spent the most amount of genuine effort in - The Ragerian Imperium. So for those who don't know, I used to be a raider 🫠 I was actually interested in becoming a defender, asked Unibot if I could pick up an old issue of his (which was frankly trash sorry Uni, and also totally unrelated but important to the story), negotiated that I could if I helped in a liberation (which I wanted to anyway), told GI about it, and then got abducted by Frenchy into Hydra to try out "regional management" (which later happened, but it was legit just raiding at first), for which something messy happened (big surprise, should've been a red flag) and TRI split off. It was not a particularly stable region... monarch kinda banned several (frankly quite liked) individuals from the new region, and the entire time there it seemed folks would bicker and get into controversy. Which was good fun, don't get me wrong. We pretty much wholly did tag raiding. We were classified as "imperialist"... lol. Anyway they also did a few large-scale operations with The Black Hawks which I personally didn't approve of, but they happened :p Our region really did a lot given its size and barely-one-year existence. (Even got declared persona non grata in TSP lol.) Jake the Snake (my immediate higher-up) and I were basically the ones keeping the region alive through recruitments (they did stamps, I did manual). Had to stop doing stuff for a few months while I adjusted to my new cashier worklife, came back and they weren't even running API or sending manual. I did 1K in a day to prove to them they could do 10 in a week ;p Alas, it finally imploded when it was revealed Jake the Snake was Moneyness, raider public enemy #1 for spoiling every operation on Christmas eve or something lol. Good fun... Small conselation, I suppose, that Aav (one of the only legislatures there) later became a site technical moderator (though it says game administrator on the nation they use if I'm remembering which one it is correctly ;p) If ever you want me to go into actual detail on any stories in TRI I gladly will lol, was a lot of good fun and drama. (yes this was just the overview, also I'm finally done sputtering) Now if you want me to talk about my time _in_ Forest... 🫠 let me know and I'll keep typing 😂 otherwise I'll make some 3PM brunch myself 🤪 19.51 - Finally finished reading... Well... where to go? 🤣 I'm now freestyling this 🙃 sorry if I broke your format a little 🫠 give me an inch I'll take a mile or something - I think I'll probably end up breaking up your essay(s) by coming up with questions when editing (yeah, gave up on that hehe...) sounds good 😂 - So then you can write to your heart's content... 🫠 oh no - How about you go on about Forest... Likes, dislikes, past happenings, future hopes, etc. 🙃 [strike]giving me _way_ too much wiggle room lol but can do[/strike] - I've given up trying to contain you Jutsa 🤣 20.05 So, after joining Forest, I was frankly somewhat shy. I didn't really do political discourse often so despite my interest in it I felt least qualified to talk about it ;p But the political satirist in me came out so I figured I'd run as a joke candidate - twice actually. Fortunately my first run (the only time we nearly had too many candidates to fit on a poll) didn't put me in too bad a light 🤪 cause my love for the map and inquiring about maybe helping with it finally translated at the end of Chan Island's term when Terrabod reached out to me. (Apparently they had tried sooner but apparently their telegram got blocked or something, woops) I learned inkscape. just for that. I frankly quite enjoyed it and now I use inkscape for most of my abhorrent and atrocious flags and conlangs 🫠 I ended up winning my second attempt as a joke candidate... granted, once I realized the nature of the fallout of the private government discord (which, I admit I frankly felt a little bashful that I was allowed in there as a complete rando lol) I opted to run on absolute transparency. I admit... I may have leaned a bit too far in that direction. The Cypher Nine and Einswenn had made some frankly decent statements that I probably could have taken into consideration, but at the time the pendulum had shifted toward extreme transparency, direct democracy, and perhaps borderline tribunalism. Didn't help I didn't exactly know what I was doing until the end I realized nothing would get done if I waited two months for input on a 1-line addition to the constitution... Alas, my FK terms were a bit doomed lol. We'd had a huge flurry of activity right up until Christmas, after which I already had a gut feeling basically noone would return (even I needed a month off lol), and sure enough I was kind of right lol. Covid restrictions were ending and people could get back to their lives. Unfortunately meant I was basically without a cabinet - was my own cartographer half my tenure. - Buy discord nitro at this point 🤣 20.18 On top of that many cabinet members either had sudden IRL changes, were already too busy, or just had burnout. (Which, reminds me, I forgot to mention I was very briefly appointed a newspaper editor for Kingdom of Great Britain - that was a horrible decision on everyone's part, I digress.) And honestly at that point I figured Forest probably wanted things to be a little more stable and quiet. Frankly after that, Garbelia (who won against me, thank goodness - my irl situation was frankly a lot too, even if the elections always boosted my stamina ;p) had a tough term with reality and the whole Nikland situation and other resignations. Uan aa Boa had a much-needed peaceful term after transitioning us to a stronghold, and Einswenn's term sadly couldn't be realized for similar reasons - they had really cute plans to make Forest cozy and expand upon lore and whatnot, but unfortunately RPs always sort-of fizzled in Forest (though Middle Barael made a frankly impressive headway in that regard during Chan's and mine own terms). Then Zerphen came around and everything exploded xD I got appointed MoFA, and you yourself Minister of Culture (best. one. ever.), and the rest would be history in several years but I probably shouldn't ramble on too much more about that unless you ask me 😂 I don't think Forest will always have this level of activity - it ebbs and flows like the wind in the trees, if you will. I know many Forestians straight-up despise FA votes taking away from our Forest crafts and our IRL political discussions - I don't blame them lol. (I straight-up renamed a couple of discord channels to include nature-based alliteration after some of the qualms from the overabundance of requests we had come in during Zerphen's term.) But I do hope more folks will come by and augh gonna have to wrap this essay up soon because I think I've burnt through almost all of my fuel. Still gotta touch on personal involvement in certain things and potential ideas for the future 🫠 - You can ramble on about Zerph's term if you want - Who am I to stop you 🤣 I mean, I won't complain if you keep complimenting me 🙃 20.30 So, things I'd done in Forest, aside from spending hours writing and post-op editing posts roughly the length of this interview, mainly were very tiny constitutional amendments, complaining about the state of the constitution (primarily article 6 - I have a few plans to change it with a pair of scissors [strike]be glad I dont' take a sledgehammer to it[/strike]), and processing incoming FA requests (including two treaties, one from Ridgefield and one from The Region That Has No Big Banks - actually did a brief interview with someone from there about our relationship [well, waht there is of one - had to specify that anything we do there is strictly individuals having fun and nothing really official beyond the treaty]). I also made a few dispatches. Got my little statistical maps - my favorites being the WA political cube and the stats Garbelia maintains - as well as the elections list, interrim officers list, and the new list of embassies / ambassadors. Because I'm also a list-making nut if you couldn't tell already 🫠 Plans for the future? Originally hoped to make a new master dispatch actually, but I'm thrilled someone else did that lol. Otherwise have some plans for some small constitutional amendments, and also prooobably a list of amendments. Unfortunately I'm not great at formatting or graphic design (if you couldn't tell from my flags) so 😂 if anyone else wants to take the reigns on any of those go ahead 🫠 OK done typing about myself (except I did forget: end of my second term, Mount Seymour actually appointed me a discord admin and forum moderator, which I immensely appreciate - honestly even if they're not listed as an RO or even in government, aren't around super often, and don't do much on-site, they're frankly still imo a very important member of Forest working in the back of things - a bit like Ruinenlust actually 😋). NOW onto Zerph's term and consequently flattering you. 20.44 So yeah Zerphen being elected was not wholly unexpected. Though I'm not eligible to vote (since I don't have a Forest account in the World Assembly lol), I kinda rooted for Garbelia ever since they first ran against me (including during 🤪) But Zerphen was probably the one time I'd have chosen otherwise lol, and I think Garb even said something along the lines of her being a great pick. There certainly were a few things that not every Forestian liked about her term. She was a bit more cosmopolitan in nature (something I actually kinda liked), y'know, dabbled a touch closer to other regions' and military gameplay, all that. But outside of maybe Augustin Alliance (for which a lot of Forestian cabinet members did quite like), all of our incoming FA requests were kind of... random lol. I may blame myself partly for it: a bit like how when Prusmia got a touch more involved with TNP, and the consequential RMB invasion that followed, I suspect my reviving the GP forum embassy thread (and perhaps spending more personal time in TRTHNBB) may've inadvertantly attracted a few more regions. But it was also a bit of a coincidence I feel; frontiers were just starting to become a year old and more established, other regions like Valyria were just kicking off. (Was a bit surprised to see that one pass actually, and they ballooned around the time something crazy.) And then of course there was the whole Alcris accord which I was a very distant party to lol. Suffice to say, the extreme influx of embassy requests, treaty proposals, and also the whole Alcris and Astoria situations were all... a lot lol. Astoria was particularly controversial, since they _just_ raided Europe, and Zerphen had approved of vastly unpopular poll on whether to have "diplomatic relations" with them - something I'm still not... _fully_ sure why was controversial, given the advice I've prior and since heard has always been "people from any region [except fascists] can interact here or elsewhere as they please". But just as well - they ceased operations not too long afterward (and while it's not really my place, I do suspect the timing was more than _purely_ coincidence ;p) Alcris was just an acid trip to an alien world, easiest closure of Forest's existence. (Incidentally I do hope to at least discuss embassies opening with New West Conifer) NOW we move onto the part where I shower you in flowers and chocolates. 21.00 So for all of the FA stuff (a lot of it somewhat controversial, although obviously not all of it without merit cause otherwise we wouldn't have passed the 2/3 majority to approve of five embassies and two treaties this year), there also was an abundance of activity within the region. Like. An unprecedented amount. We have you to thank for that 😂 I actually argue it worked best hand-in-hand to have an increase in both Foreign Affairs and Internal Affairs. It meant not only that we had more people spreading the word of our events, and consequently more individuals joining from elsewhere. It also meant that we had more invitations from other regions! Well - ok Mostly TRTHNBB frankly, but you know very well about Blue Ridge and Ridgefield hoping to do events with us. But my point is that having more events shared with others, I believe, is somewhat reinforcing in a sort-of positive feedback loop. Granted, a lot of that wouldn't have happened without you 😆 You did a magnificent job with your Summer Symphany, Trivia and poetry competition. I especially loved your scavenger hunt - was devious and incredibly beautiful, and I'd love to see another one some time >:3 But at the risk of making you blush so hard your face swallows itself and forms a rift in the multiverse, I do believe credit is due elsewhere too. Roless had invited us to a TLA RP, I believe Einswenn us to Eurovision and a flag-making competition. That fellow from Portugal had a lovely football tournament, as did Bilsa (Vynus). I was thrilled they could both make their plans work out, and my having to take a month break off of NS at an inopportune time didn't ruin that 🫠 (the slothage really got to me early this year :p) Overall there just were a ton of great events from folks all-around. I do think most of them probably could have happened anyway - especially with you pumping the gas - but I do suspect some increased involvement with our existing had a part to play 😋 And I think that even includes the bankless forest chess arena honestly - not entirely sure it'd have happened if folks didn't get more involved with TRTHNBB, after invitations, after our involvement with JEFF during N-Day thanks to Faralried. It (along with my increasing itch to do more things on NS and your insane event planning) honestly was probably the start of a lot of Forestians' increased involvement for TRTHNBB and our embassies in general. (And plus I was just thrilled I didn't have to technically be a commander for an event I absolutely dreaded anymore.) Events aren't the end-all-be-all; for sure, I appreciate the sentiment many Forestians have that they'd like things to remain smaller, cozier, and more focused on our old traditions of talking about the world and keeping our independent and non-spammy culture. (And, absolutely, I wouldn't wish for that to ever change.) But I do think that the ability to have both is mostly a good thing, and I do think that increasing the quality of our overall interactions with many individuals from other regions without burdening everyone in the RMB with an unwanted request is overall a good thing for everyone 😋 (keeping in mind, I will still continue to burden the RMB with unwanted requests because I'm still hopelessly afraid to make decisions for myself without everyone's consent 🫠) Anyway uh. I think that... might be everything I was going to rattle off with that question. uh. did you have any more on anything specifically or did I give you enough work to do as-is 🤣 21.08 [strike]I can drool over historical statistical trends like longest serving cabinet member or most elections a candidate ran in any time if you want[/strike] 21.58 - you can talk for as long as you want Jutsa...🤣 I'll just read things once your done and dread the editing process that follows... very much appreciate the flattery 🙃 JUTSA, WE'RE MOVING ONTO POLITICS AMERICA, BRITAIN, EVERYWHERE ELSE... THE COMOROS ELECTIONS ELECTIONS EVEN! MY BRAIN HAS GONE, WHY AM I USING caps 🤣 (you can tell I lost my sanity here) 🫠 we did it reddit... I finally broke him - not yet... my discord display is broken though I'm going to eat and watch something with my brother but... omg LOL 22.12 - i'm permanently stuck on 500% zoom on pc (I would insert a picture of this but the file size is quite large somehow, it was painful... I'll post it on the Forest discord if you really want to check it out) Do let me know if you have any more questions lol I genuinely would be fine rambling on about a more specific topic of interest to you :3 - thoughts on American and British elections and their future consequences? Maybe an expansion on your studying in public administration? I'm gonna drop off but I'll read your 10,000 word essay in the morning sounds good 😂 no actually I have no thoughts whatsoever 🫠 I mean. I think we might be doomed but I always think that. - expand Jutsa I think I tapped all my thoughts on that one ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ 22.17 - well this has gone well 🤣 you have about 9 hours to think of something, don't worry 🙃
Yeah... I never heard anything after that, hehe... I hope you enjoyed reading the interview and perhaps you have some sort of insight as to the pain that was for me (read some of the other interviews so you can see how things are meant to go) combined with the ridiculous display I was stuck on... Have a great day... : )
